May showed a slight improvement in consumer confidence, with Australians viewing the medium-term economic outlook a little more positively.
May highlighted a continued shift from visibility-led luxury to relationship-led luxury. Across fashion, beauty and hospitality, brands are investing less in scale and more in meaningful client engagement still.
Luxury Retail activity in May has been relatively light on store openings compared with previous months, aside of Chatswood Chase Sydney where luxury houses will continue to open boutiques in phases.

Consumer confidence showed a slight improvement in May, reaching 66 (+3pts vs April). While still in record-low territory and around 20 points below May 2025 levels, Australians are viewing the medium-term economic outlook more positively. Brand activations
The luxury industry is entering a new phase of engagement. Rather than competing for attention through increasingly visible brand statements, leading houses are focusing on depth over reach. Across Australia, May saw a continued rise in private events, previews, curated experiences and community-led activations designed to nurture long-term relationships with clients and prospects.
As the market becomes more selective, meaningful engagement is emerging as a stronger driver of loyalty than visibility alone.
