AUGUST 2026: Anything but quiet.
Updated: Sep 3

August marks the last month of winter and is usually considered a quiet month, with many Australians travelling north in search of warmth on the other side of the hemisphere.
This year, it was anything but quiet.
Across fashion, watches, beauty, automotive and luxury retail, brands used the traditionally slower winter period to create experiences, build communities and deepen their local relevance.
From Range Rover taking over Thredbo to Dior transforming Surry Hills, Gucci bringing luxury into the world of padel, and Porsche creating a one-off 911 specifically for Australia, the message was clear:
Australia's luxury calendar doesn't slow down in August. It shifts.

Consumer confidence slightly rose to 75.9 in August, its highest level since February although still in pessimistic territory. Sentiment improved. Optimism hasn't. [Roy Morgan ANZ]
Discretionary spend maintained a stable +8% increase in June year-on-year, led by household furnishing (+12.5%) with consumers taking advantage of end of financial year sales. [Experian]
SKALE's Perspective
August proved that "slow season" is a dangerous assumption.
For luxury brands, August may be quieter from a conventional retail perspective, but it can be a highly effective month for brand building.
With consumers still navigating economic uncertainty, brands are creating fewer generic touch points and more memorable reasons to engage.
The Australian examples tell a consistent story:
Place. Community. Culture. Experience.
Range Rover continues with its alpine residency. Gucci connected with a rapidly growing sport and its audience. Porsche made Australia itself part of the product story.
The opportunity for international luxury brands is therefore not simply to "be present" in Australia. It is to become locally relevant. That's the thought we would want global brand leaders to take away from this newsletter.
